Belair-Edison Neighborhoods
For almost two years, Executive Director Barbara Aylesworth and the staff at Belair-Edison Neighborhoods, Inc. (BENI) had been struggling with a database issue. They wanted a system that would track neighborhood property sales, homeownership, community events and housing violations. The system would support BENI’s work of strengthening the neighborhood’s businesses, real estate market and social fabric.
After working with a private consultant and attempting to develop this system on its own, BENI still didn’t have an effective solution. They turned to CCTS to help them assess whether the organization should invest further resources into the project.
Realizing the importance of the project, CCTS provided a faculty-led team of students to BENI. Together, they worked for five months to weed through the existing project scope and gather detailed system requirements.
The team then built a custom database application that met BENI’s needs. The staff find it easy to use the system to use and easy to train new users, too. The fully documented database is flexible enough to allow for future modifications.
The new database has simplified the task of searching for property information, owners, sales, businesses and rental properties. Barbara reports the database helps BENI compare property values against community improvement efforts and objectively measure the outcomes.
